The Front presents Replication Machines, Territorial Markers and Preliminary Drawings, an exhibition of recent works by Chicago based visual artist Mark Porter featuring kinetic sculptures and mixed media drawings.  Through the fusion of found and custom-made objects, Porter creates mechanical prototypes, which mimic human and animal behavior as well as natural phenomenon. Emphasizing the quality of the hand made object, Porter’s sculptures serve as performative prototypes, which embrace experimentation and the relationship between inventor/invention, invention/user.

Draw-a-thon

See the schedule for this year's DRAW-A-THON here!  Nov 21- 22, 2009!

Draw-a-thon is a twenty-four hour, action-packed community art event. In activities led by local artists, both beginners and professionals of all ages explore a variety of techniques and materials. Draw-a-thon attracts participants from diverse communities across the region, learning and creating side by side.

Along with structured, scheduled events, Draw-a-thon creates an environment in which spontaneous collaboration and expression is encouraged, with materials and space provided for free-drawing. For example, the Drawing Room is completely covered in paper, a space where where families can draw together. Participants can attend for any length of time, from an hour to twenty-four hours.

Draw-a-thon generates constant artistic activity, promoting the possibilities of process and demonstrating that anyone can participate. By emphasizing process over product, Draw-a-thon encourages participants to continue with artistic endeavors on their own.

The event also includes periodic live music, food vendors, the amazing Draw-o-tron 3000, art performances, art games, stunts and shenanigans. Held annually in November at The Green Project, located in the St. Claude Arts District, Draw-a-thon also raises awareness for Recycle for the Arts.

Free and open to the public. All materials are provided.

FERAL ~ C. Geary
Performance Artist Caron Geary in "FERAL"

Exhibition runs Dec. 12 – Jan 3rd

Barrister’s Gallery presents an ambitious group show assembled by international installation artist Delaney Martin with works from New York, London and locally based artists with a series of musical performances by New Orleans talents Noise, C-Section 8, The MicroShards, Walt of Big Ship and Sissy Bounce queen Big Freedia and DJ Rusty Lazer.

The Society for Decoration and Sacrifice invites visitors into a parallel world where day swiftly becomes night, furniture moves, and nothing is quite what it seems. In this interactive environment viewers will encounter artifacts from a fake civilization, inventive mechanical wonders, a Victorian parlor room transported from a far away galaxy, invasive species topiaries, multiple fountains and glorified doorknockers.

The works of the 17 different artists are seamlessly incorporated into a labyrinth of experiences for visitors to play, explore, climb, and crawl through. Installations from artists like Jennifer Odem, who recently had a solo show at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Kim and Scott Pterodactyls, whose epic tree house on Esplanade is fast becoming a New Orleans destination, Drew Zeigler, of the hallucinatory local puppet troupe Scary Toesies, and New York artist Ben Wolf, whose inventive landscapes have been turning up on international art circuit, will be on view with art works from the locals like inventor and mechanist Taylor Lee Shepherd, metal workers Rachel David, Melissa Stryker, and Eric Smith, the painter Myrtle Von Damitz III, and the renowned and recently deceased New Orleans sculptor Jeffery Cook. The show also features several high profile artists from out of town like the headline making jeweler and sculptor Arielle De Pinto (New York) and the brash performance artist Caron Geary (London) making this an exciting multimedia exhibition a must-see event.

A series of experimental musical events will also be staged within the installation including the premiere of a drone opera presented by the band Noise, the soundscape of C-Section 8, the mind slicing trio Microshards, the new one man band of Walt for Big Ship fame, and New Orleans Sissy Bounce star Big Freedia along with everyone’s favorite DJ Rusty Lazer.

Maria Lovullo

This show highlights the life and work of Maria Lovullo (1961 – 2009). A tremendously talented and prolific artist, this exhibition of past and recent work includes a rich array of paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and footage from her performance pieces. Her most recent body of work will be exhibited for the first time here. Also available at the gallery will be a comprehensive catalog of her life's work.

Born in Buffalo, NY, on June 24, 1961, Maria earned a bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York College at Purchase and a Master of Fine Arts degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was an exhibiting artist who had worked as a gallery director and a film–set decorator when she moved to Louisiana in 1990. While in Lafayette, she was a director at the Lafayette Art Gallery, a board member of the Artist Alliance, and continued to exhibit her work.

In New Orleans, Ms. LoVullo was the print shop director for Young Artists/Young Aspirations, (YA/YA), and an instructor for the Contemporary Arts Center.  She led workshops at the children’s “hands–on” tent at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for many years. In 1999, she taught printmaking to Mid–City children and their parents by having them turn discarded paper products into works of art.  “By looking at a specific –a piece of trash– and transforming it into a useful or beautiful thing, the individual builds self–esteem,” she said at the time.  “It is also an exercise in responsibility, thoughtfulness and patience.”

In 2002, while teaching in St. Charles Parish, Ms. LoVullo was selected by the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program for a study tour program in Japan.  In 2005, after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck, she and her family evacuated to Lafayette, LA, where she helped to create the Talented Arts Program within the Lafayette Parish School System. Upon returning to returning to New Orleans, Ms. LoVullo joined the faculty at Ben Franklin High School and continued to exhibit her work, including her ceramic sculptures in 2008 at The Big Top gallery in New Orleans.

In his essay: "How Little I Know," Buckminster Fuller states that: ... the human brain only waveringly Steers man through constant change. That we are all essential functions of the universe and live in an "exquisite syntropy" of actions and experiences that support as well as undermine each other. Using candies, food and other temporal substances, I've been exploring a slight paraphrase of Fuller's idea in a number of site specific installations each entitled This is All I Know. For the front I have placed on the grounds of the gallery chocolate letters that spell out the phrase. These letters are not meant for human consumption and will eventually dissolve and melt away until only a slight stain is left behind.

Exoskeletons is on view through July 11, 2010.
The exhibition is open to the public on June 12 and July 10 from 6-10pm, and by appointment. To schedule an appointment email nolatrouserhouse@gmail.com.

KR Hanrahan’s Exoskeletons is an experiential environment, combining a fabric “womb,” figurative painting, and found-object-based sculpture. With this exhibition, the artist explores themes of life and death, and the power of nature.

The collages and figurative paintings in the exhibition pair powerful, yet wistful female forms with feline and avian imagery. The near-translucent application of paint and charcoal in Hanrahan’s Mardi Gras Princess portrait, results in a ghostly form—linking powerful cultural symbolism with the spirits of New Orleans’ past. Based on a contemporary Mardi Gras Princess, the portrait speaks to the inherent strength of the Mardi Gras Indian—a figure that bears the weight of ancestral slavery with solemn resolve.

On the northeast wall of the gallery, a mixed-media sculpture features a pair of legs emerging from worn leather boots. The legs, constructed from packing tape, appear to have been sloughed off, as if the traveler simply grew out of her skin. This ghostly combination is both eerie and comforting, perhaps referencing the growth of the traveler as she passes from place to place, leaving the detritus of her body behind.

Hanrahan’s use of reclaimed material ties directly to the theme of decay. By repurposing these materials, the artist references the cyclic nature of life, emphasizing both the deathly waste we create, and the life that emerges from these ruins.

Ultimately, Exoskeletons is alternately vapid and corporeal, seemingly bridging the gap between reality and dreamscape.

"It's that bracing spirit of art anarchy that makes the on-and-near St. Claude Avenue art scene the spot to watch in 2008."
- Doug MacCash, Times-Picayune, Dec. 28, 2007

"I've told anyone who'll listen that, in many respects it was the most satisfying exhibition I've ever had. Primarily, I think, because of the people who attended. Not at all snooty and pretentious, like many art patrons (Like here in Atlanta f'rinstance). And not superficial dorks cruising from gallery to gallery in search of cheap white wine, but really not interested in the art (Like a crowd I had in Philly a couple of years ago.). I dunno...the people who showed up in NOLA were more straightforward and appreciative. Maybe because of the burgeoning art district you guys are developing there. Or maybe because of the nature of the unfeigned eccentricity of the New Orleans resident.

Thanks again. Let's continue this relationship.

- Skip [Williamson]"
