Ryan Crochet is a printmaker and draftsman from Thibodaux, Louisiana, who specializes in large-scale woodcut printmaking. He has worked a variety of jobs, including a 6-year enlistment in the US Navy, nearly a decade as a tattoo artist, and even a stint as a pinsetter in a bowling alley. While serving in the Navy he traveled the world extensively, gaining a love for traditional naval tattoos, as well as Chinese and Japanese art, which he carried over into his career in tattooing. He returned to art school in 2008, enrolling in the BFA program at Nicholls State University. It was there that he discovered the world of printmaking, and, more specifically, relief printing. During this time he was also introduced to the work of Tom Huck, a large-scale relief printmaker and satirist from St. Louis, Missouri. This opened up an entirely new world, one full of plywood, gouges, grinders, and seriously cut hands. As his love of carving images into pieces of wood grew, so did the pieces of wood. Starting out with small prints he eventually worked up to sheets measuring from 3 feet by 4 feet all the way to 4 feet by 8 feet. Upon graduation in 2011 with a BFA in drawing and printmaking, Crochet began working toward making his art into a full-time career. In 2012, Ryan P. Crochet Art became a reality, and so began the challenge of finding people who want to buy pieces of paper with dragons and swallows printed on them. He doesn’t seek to build deep and powerful meanings into his work, but rather to make images that are visually appealing and rooted deeply in the history of the tattoo culture. No tool is off limits and no image is out of bounds; that is the simple philosophy behind his work.
